CHAPTER 12

Kadish climbed up a cliff side, his backpack hanging around his waist from the only undamaged strap. He jammed a foot into a crevice and used it to make another incremental move toward the summit.

He dug his fingers into a slight edge and looked back across the rolling hills. The undulating green treetops and grass was picturesque. More importantly, Kadish couldn’t see anyone or anything following him. Taking a “shortcut” up the cliff exposed him to observation, but the longer he ran around Free Fire California on foot increased his risk of detection. Risks had to be taken.

“Bob Ross would’ve loved this,” Kadish reached high and worked his grip into another outcrop barely wider than his fingertips. For all the butchery that had been done to his body by the Revenant Program, that his muscles never seemed to fatigue was something of a boon.

His stomach rumbled hard as he pulled himself over the top of the cliff. He lay belly down on a thin carpet of dust and gave the peak a pat with one hand. He got to his knees and looked around. A low wall of rocks had been put up around a depression; someone had once needed protection from the elements and made themselves a field expedient shelter.

Sun-bleached cans and old wrappers were mashed into the floor of the depression. A trail led down the mountain to a forested valley. A long gap in the trees hinted at a road or river. Small columns of smoke to the south indicated some sort of a settlement Kadish wanted to avoid.

His stomach rumbled again.

Eat.

“Don’t need you to tell me that,” Kadish spat. He felt the bullet wound on his chest that had only partially healed. The micro-machines in his blood stream could repair the damage to his pseudo-skin only if he ingested enough proteins and minerals.

Kadish slung his one-strap pack over a shoulder and took off down the trail. He took long, loping strides that would’ve destroyed the joints of a normal person.

Can you believe they had to convince the brain dead to get this power? The flesh is weak.

Kadish slowed his high-speed descent as the ground leveled out and running smack into a tree became nearly unavoidable. He let his feet slide him to a halt like he’d stolen second base. He crouched against a rotting log, listening.

The rumble of a car on an uneven road grew louder.

“Damn it,” Kadish put his back to the log and shifted his backpack to his front.

The rumble came to a halt a dozen yards away.

“I’ll be just a minute!” a woman said.

“I need to go too!” a girl added.

“Let me do a sweep—Carlie!” a man shouted.

The pitter patter of little feet came straight to Kadish’s hiding spot. He touched his face to double-check he had “his” face in place and held his hands out to his sides.

A little girl ran around the side of the log. She had tawny, wild hair and wore a patchwork dress made of coarse fabric. She got one look at Kadish and screamed.
